As soon as the game was over on Sunday I got excited. I am not worried about Eli, I am excited. I know that this is the make or break year. If he does not show signs this year, then things will change. If that happens, then we start over and I am ok with that. If he shows the progress that I expect, then I will really be pumped. I liked Elis' reaction to his brother winning. "I'm not talking about him. It's his night. I congratulated him. It was a good game. Let's leave it at that." For once he expressed some real emotion. He knows the backlash that is going to come down on him, and he is irritated. I hope he molds this irritation and envy into harder work and better performance. The bottom line is that people wanted more out of Eli in his first two seasons. He not only did not perform to the level of expectations, but he had sit watch while Ben Roethlisberger and his brother won Super Bowls. Two people that he will forever be compared to for different reasons. This upcoming season is where we find out what Eli will become. He has already proven that he is not Ryan Leaf or Akili Smith. What he has not proven is whether he is David Carr or Troy Aikman. We will find that out soon though. I just can't wait, so my Giants can either move on to another or hang on to a future Super Bowl champ.
FYI....The formatting of the blog is not always easy to read when it comes to listing statistics. If it comes out bad, just know this about them. The only two QBs on the list above that showed considerably better stats than Eli in their first two seasons as starters are Peyton and Marino. The others are just about on par with the kid. Also note that I omitted Steve Young because he became a starter at such an older age, which definitely skews the statistics. I also omitted Carson Palmer because he is so early in his career as well, though he has clearly shown much more progress than Eli thus far.

I think Eli will draw more comparisons to Philip Rivers than Big Ben, for obvious reasons. After next year it will be interesting to see Rivers numbers vs. Eli's first two years. Yes, I realize he has LDT and Gates, but Eli hasn't exactly been weaponless either so I believe it is a fair comparison. Rivers will have to tank next year to not have a better first two years than Eli, and he already made the Pro Bowl in his first.
Look at those numbers for Dan the Man. Boy is he good.
Not to be a stickler.. but Marino's 1984 numbers were so staggering that I couldn't believe them to be true.
He actually started 11 games in 1983
1983 11 games 173 comp 296 att 58.4 2210 yards 7.5 20 td 6 int
Still very good numbers, just wanted to point out he did not throw for 5084 yards and 48 touchdowns as a rookie.
Still, what a season.
It was his first full season as a start tho. Most of the stats I put up are not from the rookie seasons. I stated that from the beginning of the post.
At the end of his career the three QBs that people will stack Eli next to most consistantly will be Big Ben/Rivers/Peyton...
Any thoughts on dunk contest
Nate Robinson
Gerald Green
Tyrus Thomas
Dwight Howard
I got to think Green is the favorite
The videos on nba.com of each are worth watching.
There was a late push to get this guy Ryan Hollins in, another tall guy who has "make believe ups" and can dunk two feet from the foul line, but he didn't get in.
The judges are pretty sweet, MJ, Dr. J, Vince, 'Nique
I read that about Collins too. Who was that you were quoting when you said "make believe ups" (obviously I know who it is, I just want you to make it public).
Foul line dunk off two feet!?! Are you kidding? How did the NBA not invite this guy?
haha... i dont remember who said it.. i was looking for the article so that i could quote it, but i couldnt find it
Who am i quoting?
Emeka Okafor kid!!
foul line dunk from two feet...anyone remember james the flight white?
Cincinnati
Yea....The kid david lee beat him down in the mcdonalds all american slam dunk contest
that was a croc of shit...just like nate winning dunk contest last year
This has nothing to do with the post but Fucking golden boy vinateri misses one field goal in the playoffs and it cost me $100...fucking new england faggot
sour grapes rambone....sour grapes...nasty nate is only 5'9" so i think he deserves 20 chances to make a dunk...its only fair!
The botched extra point cost me more than that. Get over it.
Anyone else think the Duke/UNC rivalry has lost its luster a little?
Don't get me wrong, no matter when these two teams meet it is a great game and always a tremendous atmosphere. But I was shocked when I learned that they play tomorrow for the first time today. Normally I'm aware of this weeks in advance and they are promoting it all over the place, but not this year.
My initial thought was that Duke would pull this one out in Cameron, but the fact that both teams are coming off loses, and UNC is far more talented this year, I'm going to have to lean towards the Heels.
Losing its luster? Eat me. That is the best rivalry in sports. Period. Not just college basketball, not just basketball. Every single year its a great game. Both teams consistently produce NBA lottery picks and final four teams. Even in years when one team is significantly better, they usually split the series and the games are always close and exciting. In the series at least one team has been ranked in the top 25 dating back to 1955.
Yes, Paulus is a homo and everyone wishes he flew a plane into the ground with Christian Laettner as a passenger, but the rivalry is hot and in no place is a rivalry more celebrated than in college sports. Add Dickie V and Billy Packer to the mix and its a powerful, powerful two hour television event.
Your face is losing its luster.
I could not agree more. I have been preeching the comparison thing all season. Especially to Jets fans that where all over Eli during the giants' losing streak. Another comparison which, can be skewed are the wins/loses those QB's had during those two years. Eli is right there as well. Also like you said this upcoming year is the tell all season! He has to really become a leader this year if the New York Football Giants are going to play together as a team.
