Before I address the game last night I want to remind Notre Dame fans of three short years ago. As you know, I am a Notre Dame hater. While I have my own views on their firing of Ty Willingham, I do admit that part of the reason they did it was because of what was out there. The bottom line is that they were infatuated with Urban Meyer (then in the middle of an undefeated season at Utah) and they wanted him to be their coach. He had served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame during the mid-1990s and he had said publicly that he was always interested in returning to South Bend.
I remember the scene very clearly. After firing Ty Willingham, Notre Dame went on a full court press for Meyer. Their biggest administrators and boosters flew the private Notre Dame jet down to Utah to meet with Meyer. They wanted him to agree to a deal that day. Unfortunately for them that did not happen. Not only that, but within a week he had publicly declined Notre Dame and decided to leave for University of Florida and a seven year $14 million contract. Publicly, Meyer said that he felt he had a better chance to win at Florida and it was a better decision for his family. Who knows if there are reasons beyond that which he did not say publicly. One thing is clear though. He had the chance to coach at Notre Dame and he turned it down. The job which he said was his dream job was offered to him and he declined. Now he is a National Champion at Florida.
At this point Notre Dame fans are probably not that bothered by this. They ended up getting a guy who they love (even though he was not on their radar when they fired Willingham, as referenced in the articles above). Charlie Weiss has invigorated the program, but has not won a big game yet. To be fair, Weiss came in following two recruiting classes that were rated in the top 30 but not in the top 20. Meyer meanwhile inherited two straight recruiting classes in the top 15. In the same respect though, Florida was coming off of three straight five loss seasons even with those good recruiting classes. Both Notre Dame and Florida have top five recruiting classes this year and last. I am sure that Notre Dame fans/boosters are a bit envious of Meyer and his win last night, but still have high expectations of their own for next season. If the same thing happens next year though, they might start getting a bit restless, as might their coach.
As for the National Title game last night, it was a slaughter. You can look at it in two ways. First of all, and most evident is the tremendous speed of the Florida team. They were a step ahead of Ohio St. the entire game both on offense and defense. They were constantly pressuring Troy Smith, while their QB (Chris Leak) had time to pick apart the Ohio St. defense. The other way to look at it was a superior coaching job by Florida. Early in the game they seemed to just be a step ahead with their misdirections, screens, and double moves. While speed obviously helped in this, the plays were consistently getting the Florida receivers/backs in space to use their superior speed and athletic ability.
In my mind this game was an example of Ohio St. coming into the game with a specific gameplan and not adjusting. You got the feeling that Ohio St. was confident that they could just line up and physically dominate Florida. They did not appear to blitz much and they stayed true to their conservative Big 10 offense. Florida on the other hand, was running all over the place. Ohio St. needed to adjust because it was clear early on that their gameplan was seriously flawed and it was not hindering the Florida in any way. In addition, going for it on 4th and 1 from your own 30 yard line is a sign of clear desperation. Ohio St might as well of thrown in the towel after not converting that.
Active College Coaches with Titles
Urban Meyer
Bob (don't call me Poops) Stoops
Nick Gayban Saban
Pete Carroll
Steve Spurrier
Bobby Bowden
Joe Paterno (when he is not falling over on the sidelines and running to the bathroom)
Mack Brown
Phil Fulmer
Jim Tressel
Lloyd Carr
In my mind the best in order is...
Pete Carroll
Urban Meyer
Nick Saban
Jim Tressel
Bob Stoops
If they don't have a National Title, they are not making the list.
Last thing....Has there ever been a worse Bowl performance by a reigning Heisman Trophy winner???

Hey Ice Cold,
Open wide...you about to get some BAGGINS!
Ty Blows
That article didn't even mention his recruiting classes, which you said it yourself have been miserable. He also never really embraced the ND tradition, which pissed off many fans and alumni. There was no racial motivation behind the firing. Weis, however, has had considerable success in the first 2 years, without the benefit of the talent that Ty had, has the #1 recruiting class right now on ESPN.com, and is a alumnus. Most importantly, he brought the attitude, which Meyer evidently didn't have, that it's possible to win big again at ND. Now even though Ty's one good class is graduating, if Weis goes 6-6 next year, Weis will begin to feel the heat. However, 2008 will be the telling year. Yes, 2 BCS bowls and NFL teams falling over to sign him earns him that extension and a 4th year. There are also rumors he's changing his defensive staff, which Willingham wouldn't do.
It's funny to think Meyer wasn't even Florida's first choice. I bet Spurrier and Stoops wish they took that job right about now. I think speed can make good coaches, look like great coaches. But when a team has speed and a great coach, they blow out the #1 team in the country. Ironic, that this time last year everyone was hailing Tressel as the genius for outcoaching Weis, and that Meyer's spread offense wasn't gonna work in the SEC
BAGGINS has withdrawn himself, zipped up his pants and left the building...
Typical Notre Dame fan response. The ND "tradition" is gone, your program isn't perfect (and probably cheats just like everyone else), and you are blind to the fact that Ty Willingham was fired because he did not produce, and he is black.
Bob Davie was given his five years even though he produced a 35-25 record (.583%), which happens to be the exact percentage Willingham had (he went 21-15) but was only given three and wasn't allowed to use and show the talent he had brought in. Davie also went to 3 bowl games, lost all three, and didn't qualify in 2 years. Willingham at least beat decent teams while he was there (Michigan #7 at the time, FSU #11 at the time). Can Weis at least try to beat a decent team while coaching at ND? Or come close maybe? The last close game against a good team was last year against USC. Nice work. No WAY should they have been in a BSC bowl this year also, so don't credit him there.
Also, these stars that Weis is coaching, i.e. Quinn and Samardzija, where do you think they came from? Willingham recruited them and brought them in.
Bottom line, Notre Dame is gay and no longer a college football powerhouse, haven't been since the late '80s, early '90s...get over it.
Quickly-
1. The classes Ty was bringing were part of the reason he was fired. They were awful. The reason we can't compete with LSU, USC..., yet is because there's very little talent in those classes.
2. Weis beat UM when they were #3 at the time in their house last year, if that's how you clarify a big win.
3. Regardless of whether ND should be in a BCS game, Weis had them in the position to be chosen. Willingham never even put the team in that position.
4. Of the stars he's been coaching, look at their stats pre-Weis to post-Weis. Samardzija caught 24 passes in 2 years with Ty. I'm sure you know about Quinn's performance with Ty. The list could go on.
5. Yo give the ND hater response and say ND is racist because they fired Ty. Davie should not have been around for 5 years. ND recognized this the next time around and instead of keeping him just because he was black, they fired him because he's not a good coach. If he was white, would people have had such a problem with him being fired?
Someone is drinking way too much of the HATER-ADE with Laddy.
1) Not sure how this has escalated into a Notre Dame debate, but I will happily comply. The Irish actually suck dick fora living. The players all all overrated sacks of monkey balls and their coach is an enormous fat piece of dry crusty dinosaur poop. The real question should be whether or not Weis is the fattest living person to have already undergone a bypass surgery. What a fat fuck.
2) No, there has not ever been a worse bowl performance by a Heisman winner. It is official, Smith had less yards and less frosted tips than Eric Crouch.
3) Most importantly, how clutch would it have been if somewhere someone was smart enough to parlay a Florida win and the over bet? Genius, genius, genius!
